My New Holga Camera

My cameras have one thing in common, they’re all digital. Gone were the days when we used to use those Kodak disposable cameras. They were special in one aspect which is that every single picture ends up being printed and arranged in a photo album. A couple of days ago my friend sent me her late birthday present. It was a HOLGA! Now, don’t be alarmed, I never knew what a Holga was until I got one. It’s a blue 135Holga that uses 47mm (no idea what that means). What I love about it is that it’s made out of plastic, so its very light and durable. What’s even more amazing is that it uses film, so I wouldn’t get to see the pictures until they’re developed! Something I just LOVE. My friend got me two film negatives one that uses color and the other is black and white. I can’t wait to use the camera, but FIRST I need to read the manual -.-

Getting To Know Your Herbs

I love food. It’s just sometimes difficult to name the ingredients of what I have eaten (which can be really ANNOYING). I always get my fruits, vegetables, spices and herbs jumbled up. I found this picture on Pomegranate and Patchouli that was very useful. It explains 11 of the most basic herbs used in cooking. It’s good that it’s in English because I know most of their names in Arabic.

Misunderstood Advertisement

The other day a person posted a picture on Instagram of a dog that looks like a loaf of bread. On the picture itself was written “Kalb al toast, sub7an al khaliq, wallah fi khlaqah shu2oon!”. Then the person wrote “sub7an al khaliq” as the caption. I was dumbfounded at the stupidity. Then I got aggravated that people’s comments showed that they believed that it’s loaf-shaped-dog and not just a picture!! People have the ability to ignore the facts and believe whatever they see/read/hear.

The problem is the person who uploaded the picture and the people who commented are in their 40′s!! At that age I would seriously expect much more wisdom. The second I saw it I knew: 1 – a dog would never sit on a cutting board, 2 – it’s photoshoped, 3 – it’s a Lifebuoy advertisement!! I have seen the ad a couple of years ago and I found it very creative. Of course, I decided to intervene and commented on the picture with a link of the real ad. The person never replied. I guess it was too hard to face the truth.

I really wanted to post the picture, but it’s really not clear! Here’s the actual ad:

Be honest, would you have believed that this was a real dog?

Amy Hildebrand – Blind Photographer

Cincinnati native Amy Hildebrand was born completely blind due to albinism, a disorder in which the body is unable to produce melanin (the pigment that gives color to hair, skin, and eyes). After receiving a special surgery as a teen that drastically improved her eyesight, Hildebrand fell in love with photography and went on to study it in college. While in college, Amy started a project that centered on the early stages of life, where she remembered a lot of vivid colors and shapes. She only chose this subject matter because it was easy for her to work with.

“My style is probably a mix of photojournalism and fantasy photography. Like I said, I try to incorporate my early vision into my work today, so this includes lots of light, shadows and vibrate blurry images. It’s like a dream that has traces of reality, but seen through a certain type of glass.”

She is now a successful commercial photographer and is nearly finished with an ambitious “1000 photos in 1000 days” project she started in 2009. Her mother says that Amy’s albinism is actually an advantage in her photography.

My interpretation of the word “unusual”.

A glass Pepsi bottle from the 1970s found in the desert in 2012. How unusual is that?

Weekly Photo Challenge (14) – Launch

The meaning of the word “launch” reminded me of a cat that came out of no where and leaped on me. It turned out it wanted the food I was holding. I gave it what it wanted and then I started playing with it. That cat was the cutest thing ever.

This was taken in Cyprus.
